A common question that I get from people following a mid-morning meeting at our office is, “I’m hungry. Do you recommend any restaurants nearby?” Fortunately, there are a number of excellent choices within a short distance of Horwitz & Horwitz. This week, I would like to take the time to recommend one of my favorites, Scruffy’s Hot Dogs, located just around the corner from our office at 85 W. Central Avenue, Centerville, Ohio45459 (two buildings down the street from Speedway).
Scruffy’s is open from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday and is closed on Monday and Sunday. Scruffy’s serves authentic Chicago-style fare, which includes the Chicago hot dog, gyros, and Italian beef sandwich. The owner,Steve Bell, is a graduate of the “Hot Dog University” in Chicago, and sees to it that every ingredient of the Chicago hot dog – Vienna Beef, Poppy Seed Bun, Neon Green Relish, Sport Peppers, Tomato Wedge and Mustard – are the authentic types used in Chicago establishments. This ensures that the customers can get a taste of the real Chicago delicacies without leaving Centerville, Ohio. The gyros are the best I’ve had anywhere, and are so gigantic that each could easily feed two adults. Scruffy’s also serves an amazing potato salad, which often sells out if you do not arrive early enough. The secret ingredient to this masterpiece: bacon. In recent months, Scruffy’s has added several other types of hot dog concoctions.
The restaurant is decorated with a variety of sports memorabilia celebrating the various Chicago professional sports teams. For those diners who are especially adventurous, Scruffy’s serves a “secret sandwich”, which is a delicious combination of selected ingredients from Chicago hot dog, Italian beef sandwich, and gyros. However, you must first solve a riddle from the owner revealing the name of this secret sandwich before he will agree to serve it to you.
In all, a must-stop place if you are hungry in Centerville and want to try something different.
